Anabolic steroids (AS) are synthetic derivative of testosterone (the male sex hormone). Testosterone is responsible for normal growth and development of the male sex organs and for the maintenance of secondary sex characteristics which include growth and maturation of the prostate, seminal vesicles, penis, and scrotum. Furthermore, testosterone help in thickening of the vocal cord, the alteration in body musculature and fat distribution, and the retention of nitrogen, water, and electrolytes.
 
What are the good effects?

    Anabolic Steroids in General will enhance your skeletal muscularity. Hence better performance can be achieved in all aspects of exercise performance. More speed can be achieved as well as endurance. Size of the muscular structure is increased therefore more strength can be achieved. In fact the good effects of steroids depend more on 'how' the athlete trains. For example, say that a sprinter and a powerlifter are both using Winstrol. The Sprinter will attain speed more than strength(but will gain some) with his type of training while the powerlifter will achieve more strength than speed(but will gain some) with his certain type of training. In other words Anabolic Steroids custom fits the Athletes needs.

What are the side effects?

Anabolic steroids are associated with numerous side effects. Most of the side effects are mild and reversible. However, some are permanent and life threatening.

Some of the side effects In both sexes:

     Acne -Mostly happens in the upper torso region with androgenic drugs. Goes away when cycle is finished.
     Decrease in HDL to LDL (good to bad cholesterol) ratio -True it many with certain drugs.
     Depression -Not True at all
     Edema due to fluid and electrolytes retention -Only with certain drugs and dosages.
     Impotence -Temporary
     Increased or decreased libido -Definitly true.
     Insomnia -No Evidence of Such Side effect.
     Liver cell tumors -17-alpha alkylated drugs will cause such damage when taken in abusive doses.(Anadrol)
     Male pattern baldness -Inherited Genetics play a larger part.
     Nausea -Only to specific individuals
     Vomiting -No evidence of such side effect.

In males:

     Prostate Enlargement -Temporary
     Bladder irritability -Unheard of
     Gynecomastia -True with high doses of Androgenic Steroids
     Increased frequency of erection - True to many
     Inhibition of testicular function - Only during cycle
     Testicular atrophy - Only during cycle

In females:

     Clitoral enlargement - True to many
     Deepening of voice - True to many but not enough to be generalized
     Increase in facial and body hair - I have no idea.
     Menstrual irregularities - Ditto.

Tamoxifen Citrate (Nolvadex; Tamoxifen; Tamoxan)

     Tamoxifen Citrate (TC) act on preventing gynecomastia (Gyno aka bitch tits) by blocking the receptor sites in the breast area. It is usually used with drugs that are easily converted to Estrogen (i.e. Testosterone and Anadrol). It comes in 10-40 mg tablets.
 
  Clomiphene Citrate (Clomid; Omifin; Serophene)

     Clomid is a drug that is used to normalize the function of the testes. It acts directly on the hypothalamus to
     produce LH and FSH thus increasing the level of Testosterone in the body.

 
  Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (Chorex; Gonic; Pregnyl)

     HCG is a drug used to jump start the body's own production of testosterone after the end of a steroid cycle. It
     act in the body by imitating the action of LH (a hormone that regulated testosterone production).

  Ephedrine HCL (Dymetadrine, Theodrine, plus many O.C. expectorant)

     Ephedrine (E) is used medically as an expectorant and it is found in many O.C. drugs. Strength athletes use   for it's thermogenic/anticatabolic effects; many BB compare the effect of E to those of the much stronger
     drug Clenbuterol. E is usually used in conjunction with Caffeine (C) and Aspirin (A).

  Clenbuterol Hydrocloride (Clenasma; Navegam; Spiropent)

    Clenbuterol is used in Pre-Contest cutting cycles, while decreasing calories. Clenbuterol has an anti-catabolc effect as well as a thermogenic effect.

  Human Growth Hormone (Genotropin; Humatrope; Saizen)

     hGH is a hormone produced by the pituitary (the pea-size organ deep behind your nose). This hormone is
     used by weight trainers to promote protein anabolism and the release of body fat into the bloodstream. This
     stuff cost $60-$100 per 4 IU.

    Lasix(furosemide)   

    A Precontest Diuretic, Lasix is used to flush out Water to attain a more ripped, skin tight  look. Considered very dangerous if not cautious. Now banned by the IFBB.
